We are sure many of you are aware of the time consuming nature of producing resources to support communication. When working out the value of products for comparison we based our value of time on the average wage of a specialist teaching assistant in the UK, however we are aware that many of these resources are been produced by teachers and other professionals working at a higher pay grade, which in turn has a knock on effect of increasing the value of self made resources.
The next issue we looked at was the life span of self made resources, for this we looked at communication, structure and routine resources used in the additional needs sector on a daily basis, our findings showed that self made resources had an average lifespan of 3-4 months with regular use by which point they showed clear signs of wear and tear resulting in them needing to be replaced.
So above we talk about the time to produce self made resources, many of us don’t think about it but let’s break the time down in to tasks to create a set of 60×70 mm communication symbols (in bulk for efficiency of course)
Tasks :
- Typing your symbols in to an appropriate software
- Printing the symbols out
- Cutting the paper symbols to size
- Aligning them on a laminating sheet
- Laminating the symbols
- Cutting out the laminated symbols
- Applying hook or loop Velcro
to make 12 symbols this adds up to at least half an hour of work
It’s a lot of work really isn’t it !! add the material costs and you are now looking at about 63p to produce each symbol before accounting for all the equipment you have used as well.
Now you have worked hard to make that symbol lets give it the benefit of doubt that it will last twice as long as our average lifespan findings and say it last’s 6 months before needing to be reproduced, (not all that work again !!!!)
OK so now your communication symbols are costing about £1.20 each per year! How many symbols do you use ? we found this was the point the numbers start becoming scary and we haven’t even touched on what workload you could have completed in all that time!
